SMILE PRO and SMILE: What’s Different?
The evolution of laser eye surgery has advanced significantly over the past several decades, leading to procedures like PRK, LASIK, SMILE, and SMILE PRO.
PRK (LASEK) and LASIK were developed in 1980-90s and quickly gained popularity due to its high success rate and rapid recovery.
SMILE was developed by Zeiss as a minimally invasive alternative to LASIK, particularly for myopic patients. It uses a femtosecond laser to create a small lenticule (disc) within the cornea, which is then extracted through a small incision.
SMILE received FDA approval in the U.S. in 2016 for treating myopia and later myopic astigmatism.
Since SMILE doesn’t create a flap, it often results in fewer incidences of dry eye and allows a fast recovery, making it favorable for patients with busy schedules.
SMILE Pro is the latest version of SMILE and uses an enhanced femtosecond laser for faster and more precise cuts, resulting in a quicker, more comfortable procedure.
Advantages Over SMILE:
Reduced Laser Time: The faster pulse rate of SMILE Pro’s laser reduces the overall procedure time, lowering risks of infection and minimizing potential tissue deformation.
Robotic Precision: SMILE Pro’s CentraLign® system accurately tracks eye movements and automatically aligns with the eye's center for optimal centration and surgical precision.
Enhanced Astigmatism Correction: SMILE Pro offers a more advanced solution for astigmatism, effectively correcting moderate to high degrees (over -1.0 diopters). The OcuLign® technology further optimizes treatment by adjusting the axis of astigmatism, providing excellent outcomes.
FDA Approval in 2024: SMILE Pro received FDA approval in early 2024, marking a significant step in Zeiss’s commitment to refining refractive correction procedures for both myopia and astigmatism, enhancing the experience for patients and surgeons alike.
Reduced Risk of Dry Eye Syndrome: SMILE Pro is particularly suitable for patients prone to dry eyes, as the procedure minimizes damage to corneal nerves, reducing the likelihood of dry eye syndrome compared to other refractive procedures.
