I reach for them constantly whether my eyes feel dry on my morning commute, after staring at a computer screen for hours, or when wearing contact lenses makes my eyes uncomfortable. However, standing in front of a pharmacy shelf can be overwhelming with so many options. The distinction between "Preserved" and "Preservative-Free" often leaves people wondering: "What is the difference, and which one should I buy?" Today, based on frequent questions from my clinic, I will guide you through choosing the best artificial tears for your eyes.


Why Do We Need Artificial Tears?

Our eyes are continuously covered by a delicate tear film. Rather than being plain water, this film acts as a multi-layered protective shield consisting of three key components:
• Lipid (Oil) Layer: The outermost layer acts like a lid to prevent tears from evaporating rapidly.
• Aqueous (Water) Layer: The middle layer provides essential moisture, oxygen, and nutrients to the eye.
• Mucin Layer: The innermost layer acts as an adhesive, keeping the tear film evenly attached to the corneal surface.

• Contact Lens Wear: Lenses directly contact the tear film, causing moisture to deplete faster.
