2026.09.21An expert guide from the surgical team to maintain hydrated eyes and clear vision during the dry autumn
Hello, this is BGN Eye Clinic, Jamsil Lotte Tower.
The cool autumn breeze is refreshing, but it also brings dry skin and eyes. Patients recovering from SMILE LASIK, in particular, frequently experience increased dryness during seasonal transitions.
In our consultation room, we often hear, "I never had dry eyes before, but since the surgery and the change in season, my eyes feel much stiffer." For those experiencing this, we will share essential dry eye management tips for the changing seasons!
Although SMILE LASIK boasts a fast recovery due to its minimal incision (about 2-4mm), corneal nerves are not yet fully regenerated for the first few months post-surgery. These nerves normally signal the eyes to produce more tears when dry. With this signaling temporarily weakened, tear production may decrease. When combined with the typical environmental factors of seasonal changes, the condition can worsen.
Chilly mornings and warm afternoons cause constant shifts in indoor and outdoor temperatures. This disrupts the stability of the tear film, causing moisture to evaporate more quickly.
During seasonal transitions, air conditioners are often used during the day and heaters at night. This sharply drops indoor humidity, creating a desert-like environment. Low humidity easily fractures the tear film, exposing the ocular surface and inducing dryness.
On windy days, many say their eyes feel sensitive. This happens because moisture on the eye's surface is forcibly blown away. Artificial airflow from fans or car heaters exacerbates this dryness just as much as outdoor wind.
In short, seasonal changes create a perfect storm of conditions for dry eyes. As your eyes may be more sensitive after SMILE LASIK, meticulous care is absolutely essential during this period.
When eyes feel dry, many assume using artificial tears is enough, but managing your environment comes first. The first step to protecting your eye health is maintaining proper indoor humidity. Medically, an ideal range is 40 to 60%.
• When it is too dry (below 30%): The tear film evaporates instantly, much like parched earth. This can cause stinging upon waking and make it difficult to look at a computer screen for extended periods.
• When it is too humid (above 70%): Excessive humidity encourages mold and bacteria growth indoors. This can trigger allergic reactions, leading to itchy or bloodshot eyes.
Many report feeling more stiffness in the morning than during the day. This is because indoor humidity drops overnight while we breathe, and our eyes dry out from not blinking for long hours. Placing a small humidifier in your bedroom can make your eyes feel significantly more comfortable in the morning.
• Leave a cup or basin of water out: Maintains natural humidity.
• Dry laundry indoors: Supplements moisture and purifies the air.
• Hang a damp towel: A simple but highly effective method.
A mini humidifier on your desk is highly recommended while working or studying. I keep one on my consultation desk, and turning it on for just 2-3 hours greatly reduces eye fatigue. Since environments with harsh monitor glare easily dry out the eyes, the combination of a desk humidifier and artificial tears is incredibly effective.
Preservative-free artificial tears are indispensable for managing dry eyes after SMILE LASIK.
• Do not wait until your eyes feel dry; apply them proactively (at least 3-4 times a day).
• Single-use packaging is hygienic and highly portable.
• Preservative-free drops have no usage limits, so use them whenever necessary.
• Do not look at your phone immediately after applying. Close your eyes and rest for 20-30 seconds to maximize hydration.
Dry eye syndrome is heavily influenced by environment and lifestyle. Small daily adjustments can lead to significant improvements.
• The 20-20-20 Rule: Every 20 minutes of screen time, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
• Avoid Direct Airflow: Ensure winds from heaters, A/C, or fans do not blow directly into your eyes.
• Stay Hydrated: Drink 1.5 to 2L of water daily to help stabilize the tear film.
• Warm Compresses: Place a warm towel over your eyes for 5 minutes to open the meibomian glands.
I personally highly recommend a warm compress before bed. It relieves daily fatigue and helps you open your eyes much more smoothly in the morning.
3 Core Habits to Reduce Dryness
The dryness experienced post-SMILE LASIK is mostly a temporary part of the recovery process. It will gradually improve as your corneal nerves regenerate, so there is no need for excessive concern. However, proper management during this period is crucial.
• Maintain Indoor Humidity: The ideal range is 40-60%.
• Use Preservative-Free Tears Regularly: Apply proactively before dryness sets in.
• Rest Your Eyes: Practice the 20-20-20 rule and use warm compresses before bed.
If you experience any of the following symptoms, it may not be simple seasonal dryness. Please visit the clinic for an accurate diagnosis.
• No relief from dryness even after using artificial tears.
• Persistent pain, stinging, or blurred vision.
• Severe bloodshot eyes or a strong foreign body sensation.
You cannot avoid dry seasonal air, but you can certainly manage it. A humidifier and artificial tears alone can make a huge difference in your eye comfort. With proper care, you can maintain both clear vision and hydrated eyes for a long time. Start practicing these small habits today.
