2026.10.12Hello, this is BGN Eye Clinic Jamsil Lotte Tower.
On a quiet weekend morning, enjoying a cup of coffee, our thoughts often return to the memorable moments in our consultation rooms. Today, we would like to share a recent conversation with a student preparing for military enlistment who asked: "Doctor, if I get this surgery... will I be okay in the military?"
A few days ago, a student in his early twenties visited us. He had finally gathered the courage to consider surgery after years of discomfort with glasses, but was highly anxious about facing difficulties during his early military training. Remembering friends who had similar worries, we want to address this clearly: Does vision correction surgery actually impact military service?
To give you the short answer: No. Vision correction surgeries like LASIK and LASEK do not put you at a disadvantage for military service. As long as the surgery is successful and the designated recovery period has passed, you can serve normally.
• Grades 1–3: Sufficient vision recovery without complications → Eligible for active duty.
• Grade 4: Suboptimal vision recovery or side effects like corneal haze → Supplementary service.
• Grade 5+: Severe vision loss or irreversible complications (Extremely rare).
When asked if it is safe to enter a training camp immediately after surgery, we always emphasize that a minimum of 3 to 4 weeks of recovery is required.
• LASIK: Because a corneal flap is created, you must avoid dust, sweat, and intense physical training for about a month to focus on wound healing.
• LASEK: Recovery is relatively slower, but the absence of a flap makes the eye highly resistant to external impact.
• SMILE: With a minimal incision, it offers the fastest recovery time compared to LASIK and LASEK.
Military bases are unique environments with plenty of dust, sweat, and limited hygiene facilities. If you are in the early stages of recovery, please follow these guidelines strictly:
• ✔ Wear protective transparent glasses/goggles during training.
• ✔ Use artificial tears frequently to flush out debris.
• ✔ Maintain strict hand hygiene and never rub your eyes.
• ✔ Visit a clinic for a regular check-up before enlisting.
Is it safe to participate in shooting drills or PT (Physical Training)?
Intense exercise should be avoided until you are fully recovered. The recoil and dust generated during shooting drills can irritate the eyes, so protective goggles are mandatory. It is also highly recommended to inform your drill instructors or commanding officers about your recent surgery for your safety.
Will the surgery remain on my medical record?
Yes, your surgical history will be evaluated during the military physical examination. However, this is for your safety, not to penalize you. Bringing a post-surgery medical certificate when you enlist will greatly assist the medical unit in providing appropriate care.
Final Practical Tips Before Enlistment!
If you are planning to undergo vision correction surgery before enlisting, ensure you have a buffer of at least one month. Even if it causes temporary inconvenience, your health and safety are the top priorities.
