Today, we would like to discuss something very familiar to our patients: eye drops. After undergoing SMILE LASIK, the most common questions we receive are:

"I'm confused about the order... Do artificial tears go first?"
"Can't I just put in the antibiotics and steroids together?"

We realize daily at the clinic that while many patients understand the importance of managing their eye drops, they often find the actual application confusing.

Proper eye drop usage is just as crucial to your recovery as the surgery itself. Today, we will guide you in detail on when to apply them, in what order, and how to store them.

What Eye Drops Are Prescribed After SMILE LASIK?

• Antibiotic Eye Drops
Used to prevent infection immediately after surgery. Apply every 2 hours on the day of surgery, and 4 times a day thereafter.

• Steroid Eye Drops 
Suppresses minor inflammatory responses and aids recovery. Be sure to shake well before use to mix the ingredients properly!

• Artificial Tears
Alleviates dryness immediately after surgery. Apply every 10–20 minutes on the day of surgery, and use frequently for 3–6 months thereafter.

How Much Time Should I Wait Between Drops?

One patient mentioned applying all three drops at once during a rushed morning commute. However, you must never apply them simultaneously; you must always leave an interval between each drop.

Proper Order and Timing

Each eye drop serves a different purpose. Applying them consecutively can wash away the previous medication before it is absorbed, so it is best to wait at least 1–2 minutes between each drop.

※ Recommended Order: We advise applying the antibiotic first to prevent infection.

How Should Eye Drops Be Stored?

Patients sometimes store their eye drops in the refrigerator during the hot summer. However, eye drops are sensitive medications and should be kept away from environments that are too hot or too cold.

Safe Storage Guidelines

• 1. Store indoors in a cool place, away from direct sunlight!
• 2. Avoid humid areas like the bathroom!
• 3. Antibiotic Eye drops and Anti-inflammatory Eye drops must be kept at room temperature (15–25°C / 59–77°F).
• 4. Use single-dose artificial tears immediately upon opening and discard the vial!
