2026.10.14Reasons and Care Tips for Hazy Vision Following SMILE LASIK
Hello from BGN Eye Clinic, Jamsil Lotte Tower Branch!
We have recently seen a significant increase in inquiries and procedures for vision correction surgeries such as SMILE LASIK, LASIK, and LASEK.
Often, after undergoing SMILE LASIK, our patients say: "Um... my vision seems a bit blurry?"
Before the surgery, they are usually excited, saying, "I heard it doesn't hurt at all! I can't wait." But immediately after the procedure, they often look a bit bewildered.
Another patient mentioned, "I can see well, but it feels like I'm wearing dusty glasses." Both were describing improved visual acuity but a hazy overall field of vision.
We hear this reaction multiple times a day, and I always reassure them: "Experiencing blurry vision right now is a very common reaction. There is absolutely no need to worry."
Patients undergoing SMILE LASIK often expect a dramatic "Wow!" moment of perfect clarity immediately after surgery. While a hazy field of vision can be concerning, we guide our patients that this is mostly a temporary symptom and they can rest assured.
Today, I will explain why your vision might feel blurry after surgery and share essential aftercare tips.
SMILE LASIK involves a minimal incision of about 2mm. Through this, a laser penetrates the cornea to reshape the corneal stroma. The primary advantage is the rapid recovery due to the small incision size. However, many patients report hazy vision right after the procedure. Here is why:
During the surgery, the laser reshapes the corneal stroma, naturally generating a microscopic bubble layer in the process. These bubbles cause a foggy or hazy sensation. Fortunately, they are typically absorbed naturally within 2 to 4 weeks, restoring clear vision!
Since vision correction involves surgical alteration of the cornea, minor swelling can occur during the process. This edema can cause temporary blurriness, but as your eyes heal, your vision will progressively clear up.
A temporary imbalance in tear production post-surgery can make your vision feel blurry, similar to the gritty sensation experienced with dry eye syndrome. By frequently using artificial tears and getting plenty of rest, you will naturally notice improvements.
These three causes are temporary phenomena that naturally occur during the normal healing process and typically resolve over time.
So, what should you do to ensure a fast recovery after SMILE LASIK? Here are some essential care tips to assist your healing process.
"I woke up and realized I was touching my eyes..."
This is the most common mistake post-surgery. People who habitually rub their eyes often continue doing so after the procedure, especially when they are tired or their eyes feel itchy. Sometimes, they rub them quite vigorously without realizing it.
Rubbing your eyes is never a good habit, but it is especially dangerous for a healing cornea, which is highly sensitive to external pressure. Never rub or wipe your eyes forcefully.
Daily Care Tips:
One of the most frequent complaints post-surgery is: "My eyes feel gritty... I keep wanting to close them, and it feels like there's a foreign object inside."
This is mostly a temporary symptom of dryness. After vision correction surgery, the corneal surface is still healing, and the tear film is not yet stable. Consistently applying artificial tears is crucial during this time.
Daily Care Tips:
"I was lying in bed all day bored, so I watched short-form videos on my phone for 20 hours..."
We all love relaxing at home with our phones on weekends, and this is a story we hear from patients a lot! However, it is highly recommended to limit your use of smartphones and TVs immediately after surgery.
With short-form videos like Reels, it is easy to watch endlessly. Staring at screens reduces your blink rate, which severely exacerbates dry eyes. Furthermore, fixating on a screen doubles eye fatigue. Watching your phone in a dark room before bed is an absolute "No!" Please protect your precious eyes during this critical time.
Daily Care Tips:
Experiencing blurry vision after SMILE LASIK or other vision correction surgeries is a natural part of the recovery phase. Just remember to rest your eyes, use prescribed eye drops and artificial tears, and maintain a consistent care routine!
Consistency and rest are the keys to recovery, as your eyes need downtime just as much as your body does.
