2026.10.19Hello, this is BGN Eye Clinic, Jamsil Lotte Tower Main Branch.
"When can I start wearing colored contacts again?" This is a frequent question from our SMILE LASIK patients. Many of those who wore colored lenses before surgery, especially women, wonder when it is safe to wear them again.
While patients focus on recovery immediately after surgery, around the three-week mark, as their eyes feel more comfortable and they start wearing makeup again, many hope that wearing lenses might be okay. Especially before important events, photo shoots, or weddings, the desire to look their best often prompts them to ask about colored or circle lenses.
However, the eyes are still healing, and we must advise that colored lenses can be more irritating than clear ones. Today, we will provide a clear answer to this common question.
To get straight to the point, the ability to wear colored lenses depends entirely on your recovery speed. Since recovery rates vary greatly from person to person, the best approach is to decide after a regular check-up and consultation with your surgeon.
Even if you strongly wish to wear them, we advise against it, especially within the first month post-surgery. Colored lenses place a heavier burden on the eyes compared to regular lenses.
Generally, you can evaluate whether it is safe to wear them 4 weeks after surgery, based on the results of your check-up. However, you should refrain from wearing them if you experience any of the following symptoms.
In these cases, wearing lenses can strain the eyes. The safest approach is always to consult thoroughly with the medical staff before making a decision.
Just last week, a patient who was about three weeks post-surgery asked if she could wear colored lenses. While her recovery appeared fine outwardly, a detailed examination revealed her eyes were still healing and she had dry eye syndrome. We advised her to postpone wearing lenses, as recovery is an ongoing process even if everything seems fine on the surface.
Colored lenses are a beauty item that makes your eyes look more defined. We understand the appeal and love them too. However, please remember that SMILE LASIK is not just a procedure that ends on the day of surgery; it is the starting point for maintaining long-term eye health.
Looking beautiful is important, but if you postpone that moment just a little bit to ensure a full and safe recovery, you will be able to enjoy comfortable and beautiful eyes for much longer. Especially immediately after surgery, even minor irritation to the corneal surface can have a significant impact. For products that touch your eyes directly, please be sure to follow the medical staff's guidance.
